Teaching Tips +

Spaghetti and Marshmallow Bridge is the standout challenge — run it as a timed team competition to build the longest span that can hold the most weight. It never fails to generate excitement and genuine engineering thinking. Bridge Load Testing works brilliantly as a fair test — use identical weights (pennies or cubes) and record results in a table before drawing conclusions about which design is strongest. Isambard Kingdom Brunel pairs naturally with a virtual visit to the Clifton Suspension Bridge or SS Great Britain for real-world context. Investigating Local Bridges is ideal as a homework or family activity — children photograph and sketch bridges near their home and bring findings back to share with the class.
