Included Resources +
This pack includes ten activity sheets with accompanying lesson plans and a STEM Journal for recording skeleton investigations and discoveries across a full skeletal system unit.

Curriculum Alignment +
Aligned to the Year 3 Science National Curriculum. Covers animals including humans — identifying that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food, identifying that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection, and movement. Develops understanding of the skeletal system, bone structure, and how bones and muscles work together. Cross-curricular links to Art & Design (Hand X-Ray — observational art and printmaking), DT (Spinal Model — 3D model making), and health education (Lunch Box — nutrition and bone health).
Teaching Tips +
Hand X-Ray is the standout art activity — children trace their hand, draw the bone structure inside, then use white paint or chalk on black paper for a striking X-ray effect. Results make a brilliant classroom display. Spinal Model works brilliantly with cotton reels threaded on a pipe cleaner to simulate vertebrae and discs — children can feel the flexibility and understand why the spine can bend. Bone Structure Investigation pairs well with a real chicken bone soaked in vinegar for a week — the calcium dissolves and the bone becomes rubbery, demonstrating what bones are made of in a memorable way. Vertebrate And Invertebrate works well as a sorting activity using picture cards before children record classifications in their STEM Journals.
