- Rhythm and Rhyme – Play with sound patterns, clapping and echo reading to hear the beat of the poem
- Imagery and Personification – Build shadow and nature vocabulary and experiment with describing shadows as if they were alive
- My Shadow Character – Develop sentences using conjunctions and early relative clauses to add detail about a shadow character
- My Shadow Diary – Write short diary-style entries that use punctuation, including commas and brackets, to add extra information
- My Shadow Adventures – Plan simple shadow adventures that link real-life observations with imaginative ideas
- Publish and Perform – Create a neat final version of a poem or diary entry and perform it with expression for an audience
This cross-curricular unit links English with simple science work on light and shadows, offering a rich, multi-sensory learning experience that helps children read, think and write about the world around them.

My Shadow is a Year 3 English poetry unit from Hands-On Education that uses Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic poem and simple shadow investigations to make reading and writing engaging for children aged 7–8. Learners explore their own shadows, play with rhythm and rhyme, build shadow and nature vocabulary, and create short diary entries and poems before publishing and performing their work.
Across seven structured activities, pupils practise reading poems aloud with expression, identifying patterns, and using imagery, personification, relative clauses and parenthesis to add detail. Flexible resources and practical, hands-on tasks make it easy to support mixed-ability and SEND learners, giving every child a meaningful reason to read, think and write about shadows, light and the world around them.
