This engaging resource pack combines our popular STEM-style recording sheets with practical investigations that explore how light travels, how shadows form, and how reflections are created. Perfect for Key Stage 2 learners, children will experiment with light sources, opaque and transparent objects, and mirrors while carefully recording predictions, results, and conclusions.
Included Resources +
This pack includes seven activity sheets with accompanying STEM journal recording pages for planning, observing, and evaluating light investigations.
• Shadow Investigation — explore how objects block light and create different types of shadows
• Shadow Size Activity — discover how distance and angle affect the size and shape of shadows
• Sundial Activity — track how the sun appears to move across the sky using shadows
• Drawing Shadows — develop observation skills linking science with art
• Shadow Puppets — create puppets to explore silhouettes, storytelling, and shadow shapes
• Mirror and Reflection Tasks — investigate how light reflects from shiny surfaces
• STEM Journal Recording Sheets — structured pages for predictions, results, and conclusions

Curriculum Alignment +
Aligned to the Year 3 Science National Curriculum. Covers light — recognising that they need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light, noticing that light is reflected from surfaces, recognising that light from the sun can be dangerous and that there are ways to protect their eyes, recognising that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by an opaque object, and finding patterns in the way that the size of shadows change. Cross-curricular links to Art & Design (observational drawing, shadow puppets) and outdoor learning.
Teaching Tips +
Shadow Investigation works best on a sunny day outdoors — plan it for a morning when the sun is at a low angle for the most dramatic shadow effects. Sundial Activity is ideal as a whole-day activity, returning to mark shadows at regular intervals — a great way to make the concept of the Earth's rotation tangible. Shadow Puppets make an excellent end-of-unit showcase activity — children can perform to another class. The STEM Journal recording sheets work best introduced at the start of the unit so children build a complete record of all investigations.
