This engaging resource pack combines our popular STEM Journal with hands-on investigations and practical activities that bring weather science to life for Key Stage 2 learners. Perfect for exploring meteorology, children will build weather instruments, conduct experiments, and track weather patterns while documenting their scientific journey in their STEM Journal.

Included Resources +
This pack includes nine activity sheets with accompanying lesson plans and a STEM Journal for recording weather observations, data, and scientific investigations. • STEM Journal — interactive notebook for recording weather observations, data, and scientific investigations • Weather Diary — track daily weather patterns and develop long-term observation skills • Comparing Temperature Conditions — investigate temperature variations in different locations and times • Measuring Air Pressure — build a barometer and explore how air pressure affects weather • Measure Wind Direction — create a wind vane to track wind patterns • Make An Anemometer — build an instrument to measure wind speed • Cloud In A Jar — hands-on experiment demonstrating how clouds form • Tornado In A Jar — create a vortex to understand extreme weather phenomena • Measuring Precipitation — build a rain gauge to measure rainfall accurately
Key Details +
• Year Group: KS2 (ages 7–11)
• Key Stage: KS2
• Subject: Geography, Science
• Resource Type: Activity Sheets + Lesson Plans + STEM Journal
• Format: Instant PDF Download

Curriculum Alignment +
Aligned to the KS2 Geography National Curriculum. Covers physical geography — describing and understanding key aspects of climate zones, weather, and the water cycle. Develops understanding of meteorology and weather patterns through practical instrument building and long-term data collection. Science coverage links to Year 5 — properties and changes of materials, and Earth and space (weather patterns and climate). Cross-curricular links to DT (instrument building — barometer, wind vane, anemometer, rain gauge) and Maths (data collection, recording, and analysis).
Teaching Tips +

Weather Diary works best set up at the start of the unit as a daily routine — children record observations each morning and analyse patterns at the end of the unit. Make An Anemometer and Measure Wind Direction work brilliantly as a paired outdoor weather station session — set up instruments permanently outside and revisit them throughout the topic. Cloud In A Jar and Tornado In A Jar are excellent teacher-led demonstration experiments that generate real wow moments — run them back-to-back in a single science session. Measuring Air Pressure is the most challenging build — allow a full DT session and test barometers over several days to observe pressure changes before rain.
