Covers plants — observing and describing how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants, finding out and describing how plants need water, light, and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy, and learning the structure and functions of flowering plants including roots, stem, leaves, and flowers. The four investigations develop scientific enquiry skills through prediction, observation, and recording. Cross-curricular links to DT (Seeds In My Kitchen — food and nutrition) and English (Nature Journal writing and recording).
Teaching Tips +

Plant A Seed works best at the start of the unit so children can observe real growth throughout the topic — sow seeds in the first lesson and return to them regularly. The four investigations (Celery, Soil, Sunlight, Water) work well run as a carousel across two sessions, with groups rotating between set-up experiments and recording results in their Nature Journals. Celery Absorbing Water is the quickest to set up and gives visible results within a few hours — great for a same-day wow moment. Seeds In My Kitchen is an excellent homework or family activity, encouraging children to explore their kitchen at home.
