Covers Ma3/2.1b (recognise place value in 3-digit numbers), Ma3/2.3a (recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables), Ma3/2.3b (write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using known multiplication tables, including two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental and progressing to formal written methods), and Ma3/2.3c (solve problems, including missing number problems, involving multiplication and division).
Teaching Tips +
Begin with Multiplication Patterns and Arrays to build conceptual understanding before moving to formal methods — children who understand why multiplication works find the written methods much easier to grasp. The Arrays lesson works beautifully as a cross-curricular link with Art. Number Lines can be done outdoors using chalk, making it a great active learning opportunity. For the Grid Method and Short Multiplication lessons, laminate the template sheets so children can use dry erase pens and reuse them. The Bus Stop Division lesson pairs well with a concrete approach using cubes or buttons. Fact Families is excellent for reinforcing the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. The Multiplication and Division Games session makes an ideal end-of-unit consolidation lesson.
