This engaging pack combines our popular Nature Journal with hands-on investigations and activities that bring weather science to life for Key Stage 1 learners. Perfect for young meteorologists, children will observe, measure, and record weather patterns while developing their scientific enquiry skills through outdoor learning and practical experiments.
Included Resources +
This pack includes ten activity sheets with accompanying lesson plans and a Nature Journal for recording weather observations, measurements, and discoveries throughout the year.
• Nature Journal — interactive notebook for recording weather observations, measurements, and discoveries
• Play Outside — encourage outdoor exploration and weather observation in all seasons
• UK Weather Map — learn about weather patterns across the United Kingdom
• Measuring Wind Direction — build a wind vane and discover where the wind comes from
• Measuring Precipitation — create a rain gauge to measure rainfall
• Measuring Temperature — learn to use thermometers and track temperature changes
• Types Of Clouds — identify and classify different cloud formations
• Measuring Cloud Cover — observe and record how much of the sky is covered by clouds
• Sundial — explore how the sun's position changes throughout the day
• Design A Snowflake — discover the science and symmetry of snowflakes through art

Curriculum Alignment +
Aligned to the KS1 Geography and Science National Curriculum. Geography coverage includes weather and climate — observing and describing weather patterns across the UK and the seasons. Science coverage includes Year 1 seasonal changes (weather associated with the seasons) and Year 2 uses of everyday materials. Develops scientific enquiry skills through measurement, observation, and data recording. Cross-curricular links to Maths (Year 2 — measuring and data handling), Art & Design (Design A Snowflake — symmetry and pattern), and outdoor learning.
Teaching Tips +
Measuring Wind Direction and Measuring Precipitation work best set up as permanent outdoor stations that children visit regularly — a weather station corner of the playground makes a brilliant ongoing class project. The Nature Journal works best introduced at the start of the school year so children build a full year of weather records across all four seasons. UK Weather Map is a great whole-class starter using a projected map — children can mark daily weather symbols across the country. Design A Snowflake makes an excellent winter display activity and pairs naturally with a discussion of water changing state (ice, water, steam) for a Year 2 science link.
