Explore Creative Textiles and Hands-On Design

Transform Key Stage 2 children into confident young designers and makers with seven exciting textiles activities that explore fabric, stitching, weaving and decorative techniques. This creative, cross-curricular resource pack combines art & design, design & technology and PSHE to develop fine motor control, design thinking and an understanding of how real textile products are planned and made—carefully aligned to the National Curriculum for KS2.

What's Included:

  • Painted Silk Sun Catcher – Experiment with silk painting and resist techniques to design and create a colourful hanging sun catcher.
  • Weaving – Learn how warp and weft threads work together on a simple cardboard loom to produce patterned woven fabrics.
  • Fabric Collage – Explore colour, pattern and texture by layering fabric scraps, buttons and ribbons to build a textured textile artwork.
  • No-Sew Bunting – Design and assemble decorative bunting using fabric or card, introducing repeating patterns and layout skills without needing a needle and thread.
  • Block Print Tote Bag – Create simple printing blocks and use fabric paint to decorate a tote bag or fabric surface with repeated motifs and patterns.
  • Sock Puppet – Turn an old sock into a characterful puppet using fabric pieces, buttons and other embellishments, linking textiles to storytelling and drama.
  • Sewing on Burlap – Practise running stitch on burlap fabric with coloured wool, then use stitching to create a simple textile design or picture.

Learning Outcomes:

Children will understand how different textile techniques—such as weaving, collage, printing and basic hand sewing—can be used to decorate and construct fabric products. They will develop fine motor skills, pattern awareness and design vocabulary while following the full design–make–evaluate process. Activities support KS2 Art & Design and Design & Technology objectives, with opportunities to discuss material properties, sustainability and how textiles are used in everyday life.

Why Teachers Love This Resource:

Ready-to-teach activities make it easy to deliver inspiring textiles lessons using simple, accessible materials. Clear instructions and printable resources reduce preparation time while still allowing plenty of scope for creativity and pupil choice. Ideal for mixed-ability classes and home educators, with projects that can be scaled up or down in complexity, encourage independence and teamwork, and give every child a finished textile piece they can be proud of.
